Big Brothers Big Sisters National Organization
Big Brothers Big Sisters is considered the nation's premiere youth-service organization. For nearly a century, we have been successful in creating and nurturing relationships between adults and children. Today, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves hundreds of thousands of children in 5,000 communities across the country. And we are continually growing: Our goal is to provide Bigs to one million children by 2010.
Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters Local Organization
Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters was founded in Prescott, Arizona in 1971. The organization started with a staff of two Vista Volunteers and in its first year, matched 40 Bigs & Littles. Since that time, we have brought magic into the lives of over 6,000 children.
Today, Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters serves all of Yavapai County and Sedona with offices in Prescott, Prescott Valley, and the Verde Valley. Last year alone, Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters served over 800 children, ranking our agency in the top 1% nationally for the number of children matched per capita.
Many of the children we work with are more likely to experience trouble in school, develop drug abuse problems, and/or become delinquent. Many have been abused and more than 70% live at or below the poverty level. Big Brothers and Big Sisters bring magic to these children's lives and change their lives forever. Little Brothers and Sisters are:
-
46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
-
27% less likely to begin using alcohol
-
53% less likely to skip school
-
33% less likely to have violent confrontations
Our community faces many challenges; poverty, crime, drugs, and more. Mentoring is the single most effective way to have a lasting impact on the life of a child at risk. A child without a mentor is like an explorer without a map; wandering lost through life.
