PDF Print E-mail

Big Brothers Big Sisters was first started in 1904 by a young New York city court clerk named Ernest Kent Coulter. By 1916 Big Brothers had spread to 96 cities across the country. In 1977 Big Brothers of America and Big Sisters International joined forces and became Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and now operates in all 50 states and 12 countries.

The following are a couple of our local Big Brothers/Big Sisters who have reached out to some children in our area.

George and Jesse

George Hedberg has been a Big Brother for several months and really enjoys the time he spends with his Little Brother Jesse.

"I felt I had something to give kids who don't have a father figure in their lives, and also because I enjoyed raising my own two sons," George said.

George and Jesse go bowling, play miniature golf, and much more.

"We also go pistol shooting and Jesse really loves that. I want to teach him about hunting and fishing and guy stuff," George smiled. "Now Jesse wants to go camping , so that will be our next big outing."

George explained about that many kids that need a "big brother" in their lives.

"Anybody who wants to be a big brother will find it very rewarding," George said. "I can relate to these kids, because my father was never around. So I do this because I wanted to be the opposite of my father, and I think I've succeeded."

Barbara and Teea

"Being a 'big sister' keeps me young at heart," Big Sister Barbara Cox said.

Barbara has been a 'big sister' for the past 10 years, along with her husband, Larry as a Big Brother, and they enjoyed being in the program together.

Barbara has been with Teea, her 'little sister' for four of those years, since Teea was 10 years old.

"I wanted someone younger so I could grow with them, and I do things with Teea that I would never do on my own," Barbara said.

Barbara said that she had been a single mom raising two sons and two daughters.

"Now that my kids are grown, I felt I could make a difference in a child's life. I hope I'm instilling in Teea honesty and to be a good, decent human being. But I'm just glad I'm there for her when she needs me," she said.

Many children in this area would love to have a Big Brother or Big Sister to do things with. The program is currently seeking volunteers. "People think they are too busy to get involved," Barbara said. "Well, I'm busy, too, but you have to make time. When you do, you'll find you have so much fun!"
