Children need support to accomplish their dreams. This statement is even more true when referring to a boy facing adversity. Eight hours a month is all it could take to change this child’s life.
Meet Joel, a 7-year-old second grader who dreams of becoming a fireman when he grows up. Joel’s father is not involved in his life, but seeing a Big Brother every week can mold Joel into the successful man he wishes to become. Joel’s need for a positive male role model also exists because he is typically stuck at home and unable to do fun activities with others.
A self-proclaimed “expert of math”, He enjoys watching TV, drawing butterflies, and playing his Nintendo DS. Joel also enjoys singing, arts and crafts, and building structures with Legos. Joel also claims that he does not get in trouble at school, but occasionally tussles with his older brother for fun.
Whether or not you faced major adversity, you more than likely had a dream as a child. That dream gave you excitement and an eagerness to obtain it. Joel’s dream is to save others as a fireman, and between his ears lies the potential to make this dream a reality. Spending 8 hours a month with a child like Joel can turn a boy into a successful adult.
