Destrian’s Batman sneakers flash red when he’s moving, so the active five-year-old is wearing out those lights rapidly. But he’s remarkably still when crouched down on the ground looking for insects. “Roly-polies” (pillbugs) especially fascinate him as they curl into tight balls. He loves nature and insects, but made a point of saying he doesn’t like spiders.
Recently adopted by the family who fostered him for two-and-a-half years, Destrian lives in a bustling household that includes other foster children and currently numbers nine members. Mom and Dad both work full-time and try to spend quality time with each child, but see that Destrian tends to be in competition with the older kids and could benefit from one-on-one time with a Big Brother.
He really enjoyed a summer family trip to Sea World, but was most impressed that he got to swim at the hotel. Water play is something he would happily do with a Big Brother. He would be delighted with a walk in the park or woods – with frequent pauses to inspect bugs, rocks, and anything else that tickles his fancy. Destrian also is intrigued by cameras and would love to capture images of all kinds of cool stuff.
Anyone interested in being a Big to Destrian or another child, or in referring a potential Little, can call Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters at 928-778-5135, or if you can’t be a Big, how about supporting a Big? The Arizona State Tax Credit is one way to do so. YBBBS always can use volunteer office help and has other ways people can be involved, as well. Go ahead and call to reap endless satisfaction.
