Connor

First match in the Verde Valley for 2026!

Connor had been waiting a long time.

He first enrolled in Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters in the summer of 2024, hopeful and curious about what it would mean to have a Big Brother. By January 2025, after completing his interview, he was ready—but there was one problem. There simply weren’t enough Big Brothers in the Verde Valley.

So Connor waited.

Connor

Through 2025 and into early 2026, he stayed on the waitlist, quietly holding onto the hope that someone out there would be the right match. During that time, Connor was also navigating something no child should have to—losing his mom the year before. Even so, he showed resilience, creativity, and a spark that never faded.

Then, finally, something changed.

As staff began enrolling new volunteers in the Verde, they noticed a potential connection—one Big Brother who loved the outdoors, science, and adventure… just like Connor.

When they met for the first time, it was simple. No big expectations. Just a game of Jenga at Connor’s grandparents’ house. But something important happened—his Big Brother listened. He followed Connor’s lead. He made space for Connor to be himself.

And Connor lit up.

He started drawing—sharks, detailed and imaginative—and began telling stories about one in particular: a shark named Jeb, an explorer of the ocean. Soon, another character emerged—Sharklock, a clever detective of the sea. His Big Brother didn’t just listen—he leaned in. He encouraged Connor’s creativity and suggested they turn these ideas into a comic book they could build together.

What started as a first meeting became the beginning of something much bigger: trust, confidence, and connection.

This is what mentorship looks like.

It’s not about having all the answers. It’s about showing up. Listening. Encouraging. Being present in a young person’s life when it matters most.

Right now, there are more boys just like Connor in the Verde Valley—waiting. Waiting for someone to shoot hoops with, explore the outdoors, talk about life, or simply listen.

They don’t need perfection.

They need you.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a Big Brother, this is your sign. One hour, a few times a month, can change the trajectory of a child’s life—and yours.

Because somewhere out there is another Connor…
and he’s still waiting.
